Do We Still Need Hashtags in 2025?
Spoiler Alert: big changes with Instgram and Google starting July 10!!! Read below.
Hashtags were once the key to knowing your post was seen on social media. But now, many ask: Are hashtags still important? The short answer is: yes, but not like before. Let’s see when they are good, when they are not, and how to use them easy.
Hashtags Still Aid — But They’re Not Magic
On places like Instagram and TikTok, hashtags help new folks find your stuff — great if you’re small or in a tight group. On LinkedIn, they put you in topic lists. And on X (Twitter), they are key for live stuff and hot talks.
But social media has gotten smart. Now, search leans on keywords, and how the system thinks about your content matters more than which hashtag you use. So, hashtags still sort your post, but they’re just part of how you get seen.
When Hashtags Aid — and When They Do Not
✅ Trying to meet a tight crowd: Exact hashtags like #YYCWebDesign or #CanadaWebDesigner put you in front of the right people.
✅ You’re pushing a tag for a cause or brand: Good for events, tests, or stuff made by users.
✅ You’re on Instagram, TikTok, or LinkedIn: These spots still use hashtags to find things.
❌ You slap 30 broad hashtags on each post: That’s not good — it can look spammy and drop talks.
❌ You post to Facebook: Hashtags don’t do much there now. Better to make good posts and tag folks or pages.
So… Are They Needed?
No, not all the time. You don’t have to have hashtags to win — mainly if your stuff is good, your crowd is into it, and you use smart words in your titles.
But can they aid? Yes — if you use them with care, not just by habit.
How to Use Hashtags in 2025 (Without Going Overboard)
TIKTOK: Use 5–10 fitting hashtags on TikTok
INSTAGRAM: Use 1-3 but focus more on keywords
FACEBOOK: Stop using hashtags
LINKEDIN: Use them strategically and targeted
Starting July 10, 2025 Instagram content becomes searchable on Google!!! Content is king! The feature enables photos, videos, carousels, and reels from business and creator accounts to appear in organic search results, marking a fundamental shift in how social media content intersects with web search.
